Japan beats Ivory Coast 1-0 in Kirin Cup

TOYOTA, Japan (AP) - Keiji Tamada's first-half goal gave Japan a 1-0 win over Ivory Coast in Saturday's Kirin Cup exhibition game.

Tamada struck in the 21st minute of the game at a rain-drenched Toyota Stadium, volleying Makoto Hasebe's cross through the legs of goalkeeper Aristide Zogbo.

Goalkeeper Seigo Narazaki blocked Etienne Boka's free kick on the hour mark and pulled off two more stops to defend the hosts' lead in the second period.

Ivory Coast played out a 1-1 draw against Paraguay in Thursday's tournament opener at Yokohama.

Three-time Asian champions Japan will face Paraguay on Tuesday to complete the triangular event. Japan is using the tournament as preparation for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Oman, Thailand and Bahrain in June.
