MADRID, Spain (AP) - Atletico Madrid is set to sign Netherlands defender John Heitinga from Ajax.
Heitinga passed a routine medical on Sunday and was expected to complete his transfer the following day.
Ajax said in April that Atletico had agreed to pay €10 million (US$15.75 million) for Heitinga, who will reportedly sign a five-year contract.
The 24-year-old Heitinga, a versatile defender who has also played in midfield, has been capped 33 times. He made his debut with Ajax in 2001 and has appeared 210 times for the Amsterdam club.
Atletico is looking to strengthen its squad for its Champions League campaign next season, the first time for 12 seasons the team has involved in Europe's top club competition.
Atletico, whose defense leaked 47 league goals last season, has also reportedly agreed to sign Czech Republic defender Tomas Ujfalusi on a free transfer from Fiorentina.
