Blues 'to bid £55m' for Ramos

Chelsea are reportedly lining up a jaw-dropping £55million for Real Madrid's Spain international defender Sergio Ramos.

Reports emanating from the Spanish capital suggest the Blues are prepared to make Ramos the most expensive player in history, topping the £46million Real paid Juventus for Zinedine Zidane in 2001.

Chelsea are drawing up a list of targets for next season and Ramos is thought to be amongst their top priorities.

Ramos is regarded as one of the best young defenders in Europe and he became the third most expensive teenager in history when he moved to Real in 2005 from Sevilla for around £20million.

The 22-year-old, who can play at right-back and centre-back, could be seen as the answer to Chelsea's problems at right full-back with Michael Essien being forced to play there on occasion this season.

Ramos is thought to be considering his future at the Bernabeu after growing frustrated at the club's reluctance to offer him a new improved contract.

The all-action defender has a contract with Real until 2013, but is believed to be keen to sign a new lucrative deal to bring him in line with the top earners at the club.

Real are determined to keep hold of Ramos with the Spain international an established member of Bernd Schuster's squad and only a record offer could tempt them into parting with one of their prized assets
