Quique Sanchez Flores appointed Benfica coach

LISBON, Portugal (AP) - Quique Sanchez Flores is Benfica's new coach, the two-time European champion's fourth in a year.

Sanchez Flores, who was fired by Valencia in November, has signed a two-year contract. News reports said the Spaniard will receive an annual salary of €1.5 million (US$2.4 million).

Benfica is coming off a disappointing season in which it finished fourth in the league and failed to qualify for the Champions League, instead gaining a berth in the UEFA Cup.

"We're starting from a position with two aims: one is to win back a place in the Champions League and the other is to be champion of the Portuguese league," Sanchez Flores was quoted as saying by Portuguese state agency Lusa on Saturday.

The Lisbon club fired Fernando Santos as coach last August, with Jose Antonio Camacho returning for his second spell. However, Camacho resigned less than seven months later, leaving caretaker Fernando Chalana to complete the season.

Sanchez Flores, a 43-year-old former Spain defender who played for Valencia and Real Madrid and began coaching with Getafe, led Valencia into the Champions League in each of his first two seasons in charge.

During his third season, he was replaced by Ronald Koeman with Valencia in fourth place. The team slumped in the league and Koeman was fired in March. Valencia finished the season 10th
