MUNICH, Germany (AP) - Lucio scored an own-goal Thursday to give Zenit St. Petersburg a 1-1 draw with Bayern Munich in the first leg of the UEFA Cup semifinals.
"Making up a goal is difficult but possible," Bayern forward Lukas Podolski said. "If not for that stupid goal we allowed, we might have scored a second."
The Russian champions, owned by gas giant Gazprom, is after their first major title.
The second leg is on May 1.
Bayern, the four-time European champions, came close to both winning and losing in the final minutes in front of 66,000 people at Allianz Arena.
Fayzulin's shot in the 83rd bounced off substitute Bayern goalkeeper Michael Rensing and then Lucio. The ball was headed in for a goal until Ze Roberto dived to clear on the line.
Bayern wasted several late chances to score, too.
Lucio's powerful 79th-minute shot was tipped over the crossbar by Malafeev, while striker Lukas Podolski had an injury-time strike that just missed the post.
"We will get our chances in the second leg because Zenit likes to attack," Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld said. "Then we have to convert them."
Starting Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn limped off the field in the 67th minute with a pinched nerve in his leg in his last home game in European competition. The 38-year-old Kahn is retiring at the end of the season.
Bayern, which won the UEFA Cup in 1996, is chasing a triple, having won the German Cup and leading in the Bundesliga.
The German team had to play without Luca Toni, the competition's leading scorer with 10 goals. The Italian was suspended for a fifth yellow card.
Bayern forwards Miroslav Klose and Podolski didn't have a single first-half attempt on goal.
"Of course it's harder without Toni, but without him we had chances too," Bayern midfielder Mark van Bommel said. "They just didn't go in."
Bayern can take heart that it will have Toni back for the second leg, while Zenit has three starters suspended. That includes star midfielder Andrei Arshavin, the captain of the Russian national team.
